Very often the virtual simulation community discusses about the benefits related to the use of open source software. With this paper we want to explain our opinion, with a specific attention to the virtual simulation field.
This change obviously requires a mind-changing by managers, who have to invest much more in people rather than in software.
In this paper we describe how to build a finite element solver for a thermoelasticity problem in two dimension. We describe how easy can be to prepare the Scilab scripts in order to solve the problem and we show the correctness of all the obtained results. Moreover, the demonstrate how all the scripts can be easily modified to solve more complex problems, including three dimensional problems.
